Victron Argo Diode Battery Combiner: Reliable DC Power Isolation for Critical Systems

Continuous Power Supply with Schottky Diode Technology

The Victron Argo Diode Battery Combiner is engineered to maintain uninterrupted DC power to mission-critical equipment by enabling parallel operation of two independent battery banks. Using high-performance Schottky diodes, it ensures that a failure in one power source does not compromise the load, making it an essential component for electronic engine controls, navigation systems, and communication setups where power continuity is non-negotiable.

Unlike generic diode combiners that suffer from excessive voltage drop and heat buildup, the Argo series leverages Schottky diode technology to minimise forward voltage loss. At low current, the drop is approximately 0.3 V, rising to only 0.45 V at the rated 40 A output. This efficiency reduces energy waste and thermal stress, contributing to longer service life and stable performance in demanding environments.

Key Features

• 40 A continuous current rating for robust power handling in 12 V and 24 V DC systems
• Dual battery input isolation prevents reverse current flow, protecting each bank from faults in the other
• Low forward voltage drop (0.3 V at low current, 0.45 V at rated output) thanks to Schottky diodes
• Integrated aluminium heat sink with blue anodised cooling fins for effective thermal management
• M6 bolt terminals (approx. 1/4″-20) for secure, low-resistance connections with heavy-duty lugs
• Compact footprint (60 x 120 x 75 mm) and lightweight 0.8 kg design for flexible installation

Engineered for Mission-Critical Reliability

In applications such as marine electronics, emergency systems, and off-grid power setups, a single battery failure can lead to costly downtime or safety risks. The Victron Argo Diode Combiner mitigates this by isolating each battery bank. If one battery develops a short circuit or becomes discharged, the diode path blocks reverse current, allowing the healthy battery to continue supplying the load without interruption. This isolation also simplifies maintenance, as batteries can be serviced or replaced individually without shutting down the entire system.

The device’s M6 bolt terminals (approx. 1/4″-20) accommodate heavy-gauge cables, ensuring minimal resistive losses even at full 40 A load. The extruded aluminium heat sink dissipates heat efficiently, but note that the surface can become hot during operation; mount only on a non-flammable surface and allow adequate ventilation.

Versatile Integration for 12 V and 24 V Systems

Compatible with both 12 V and 24 V nominal battery voltages, this combiner suits a wide range of DC architectures. Whether you are building a redundant power supply for a marine navigation suite, a backup system for an off-grid solar installation, or a dual-battery setup in a vehicle, the Argo Diode Combiner provides a straightforward, solid-state solution with no moving parts to wear out.

Typical use cases include:

• Electronic engine control units (ECUs) on vessels and industrial machinery
• Redundant power for communication radios and navigation instruments
• Dual-battery systems in 4WDs, caravans, and camper trailers
• Backup power for security systems and remote monitoring equipment
• Solar-charged battery banks where isolation prevents backfeed at night

Installation Considerations

For optimal performance, use appropriately sized cables to minimise voltage drop. The M6 terminals accept ring lugs suitable for high-current wiring. Ensure the mounting surface is non-flammable and allows airflow around the heat sink. While the diode combiner is inherently reliable, proper fusing on each battery input is recommended to protect against overcurrent conditions.
